S.E.N. Placement

I did my S.E.N. placement in St. John of God's in Islandbridge. We had  a class of pupils aged 12-18 with various severe disabilities, such as autism and down syndrome, leaving some pupils incapable of communicating with others. We did a collage on the theme of nature with the pupils, bringing them on nature walks around the grounds of St. John of God's, and bringing them to the natural history museum in Merrion Square.

The experience was very different than any mainstream school placements, but I also found it more rewarding. I helped with the SNA's to tend to the gardens in the school, and it was a great accomplishment to see pupils engaging in the subject, despite being told that a lot of them do not co-operate with school work. Here is a gallery of photos from the school placement, showing the pupils working and elements of the final piece.
